Caving consists of entering a cave, in order to discover the wonders that Mother Nature hides under the ground we walk on.
The Peaks of Europe are a perfect enclave with its limestone soil full of cracks, which sometimes extend for kilometers into mountains that were once sea beds. The Cantabrian mountain range is recognized worldwide for the quantity and quality of caves and formations within them.
Bores is a small town in the Picos de Europa located three kilometers from Panes. This land gave shelter to those who took to the mountains in the Spanish civil war. The famous “Maquis” Joaquín and Bedoya, among others, were sheltered along with numerous neighbors in this and other nearby caves since from here you can see the old civil guard barracks in Panes. Sometimes the older neighbors do not tell their stories from that time.
Here you will find the “Subores” cave, which is full of whimsical and unique formations: stalactites, stalagmites, flags, gours, eccentrics…etc. But this is not the only thing that attracts us to it since as adventurers we want to delve in using the techniques of an explorer: rappelling, handrails, climbing down, vertical ascents…
From the Canoe Adventure Trophy Base in Panes they give us the equipment and take us less than five minutes by vehicle. At the foot of the cave we parked and got equipped. The emotion is great; Upon entering we are surprised by the height and dimensions of the rooms (more than forty meters high), this calms us down, making us feel small. In a small room our guide does not give safety instructions, which are very helpful. We enter little by little to discover incredible formations, their growth is atypical as our guide explains to us.
Adventure is the reason for our visit to “Subores” and soon we began to have to use the devices that we carry hanging from the harness. The 12-meter balled rappel is undoubtedly an expected and at the same time feared point, but our guide has us well secured with a second safety rope. There are few and short narrow areas, only for a first contact, they tell us, so we know our tastes without getting overwhelmed.
Now it’s time to climb the Vertical Wall which is easier than expected, since we have a pulley system that our guide manages.
The temperature inside the cave is around 12 degrees, but the absence of drafts, combined with physical exercise means that we hardly need shelter.
