Jesters of Santiuste.
The Jesters of Santiuste are the best show that the Cantabrian Sea can offer us on days when the wind blows strongly and the sea is rough. The water jets can reach 30 meters high, or even more.
What is a Jester? – A jester is an inlet of water from a strong wave. This advances through a crack and in the cliffs that has a vertical exit to the outside, projecting a column of water with a strong blow. This snort of air and water is what gives the name Jester.
Where is Santiuste? As we advance from Unquera towards Llanes along the national highway, we cross the town “La Franca” and as soon as we pass the intersection through which we would enter La Franca beach we begin to climb a strong ramp. On the right we enter a large parking lot or rest area and we are already in Santiuste.
To get to Los Bufones, we must walk along the national highway towards Llanes for about 300 meters, turn right along a narrow path, cross the train tracks at an unmarked point, and enter some pasture land (Santiuste).
If the day is favorable, it won’t take long to see the jets of water and hear the roar of the snorts. If, on the other hand, the day is not suitable, we will only see a crack in the ground that we will not give importance to.
It is a wonderful place to contemplate the sea. We can climb the hill that we have to the “East” to better observe the entire coast. From San Vicente de la Barquera to Llanes we can see with complete clarity the impressive cliffs that run along the coast.
These impressive jesters are visible from the entire coast and can even be seen from the top of the Sierra del Cuera, which is a magnificent spectacle and a great complement to the route to the Alevia mines.
We can combine it with the coastal path that reaches Buelna and we will have a very complete day.

Difficulty: Low. Be very careful with the train track.
Tips: Go on days with rough seas, bring a raincoat, children and pets well controlled, BE CAREFUL WITH THE TRAIN!
